After a successful launch back in 2016 the 2nd Annual International Crowd Safety Conference (ICSC) will take place alongside International Security Expo (ISEC) 2018 on the 28-29 November at London Olympia.

Run in association with The Square Metre Ltd and Crowd Safety Training, the two day conference will see renowned experts discuss everything from the ever changing landscape of counter-terrorism at events, training developments for crowd safety, the evolution of the crowd safety industry, managing staff and stress in critical incidents, the guest experience update, defence strategies against litigation claims and much more.

Andy Hollinson, CEO of The Square Metre Ltd said: “It’s great to be hosting the 2nd annual conference alongside International Security Expo this year as it gives delegates the chance to also benefit from the educational content and security innovations and services that the broader show has to offer. We have an ongoing commitment to improve crowd safety around the world and the International Crowd Safety Conference provides a perfect platform to discuss the current issues organisations are facing.”

The industry has seen a move away from event organisers only utilising purpose built venues such as stadia or arenas, now events are held on the public roads, greenfield sites and other complex environments such as shopping centres or public spaces such as town centres. The introduction of legislation also means event organisers and their staff have a number of liabilities as well as a duty of care to their customers.

Having enough staff to make an event safe both under the normal conditions and an emergency conditions is important , but how can you ensure that the security staff working at an event will be an effective resource in the event of an emergency?

The Square Metre’s Crowd Management and Security Consultant Robbie Naish comments: “The answer is good robust training that allows security staff to understand an event and how it all works, backed up by good leaders who mentor them throughout the event. ‘Knowledge is Power’ so let’s share it.”

Peter Jones, CEO, International Security Expo continues “The extensive ICSC programme will deliver high-level insight into the key issues for crowd safety and security, alongside practical advice, best practice insight and solutions to the challenges ahead. The conference is an integral part of the offering at International Security Expo and we look forward to continuing the relationship in the future.”

The Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) has confirmed that The Square Metre is now approved to provide Apprenticeships, and has been placed on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers.

This is superb news for the SqM team who will be offering five different Apprenticeships including Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner, Level 3 Team Leader Supervisor, Level 3 Business Administration, Level 3 Digital Marketing and Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager.

“After opening our branch in Northampton last year, we have firmly established ourselves across Northamptonshire and have already helped hundreds of individuals upskill, gain new qualifications and get back into work”, commented CEO Andy Hollinson.

“We are in talks with lots of local employers to help upskill their teams, and these Apprenticeships offer local businesses another great opportunity to implement new skills, improve performance and boost knowledge”.

There is a common misconception that Apprenticeships only exist for fledglings at the very beginning of their careers. However, Apprenticeships can provide learners of all ages (16+) with the right skills to not only do their job competently, but also allowing them to improve their performance and boost their sector knowledge.

The Apprenticeship qualifications will only seek to broaden the range of service offered here at The Square Metre. We will continue to offer our range of popular training courses and qualifications, not to mention our e-learning platform here on our website!

Small and medium-sized businesses across Northamptonshire can take advantage of funding to upskill their teams in a new initiative called ‘Skills Support for the Workforce’ (SSW).

Do you find it difficult to attract and retain employees? Following various conversations with local businesses, we have discovered many businesses struggle to find the best candidates, often loosing out to competitors. Offering the very best training and development programme can help give your business the edge.

Why is upskilling your workforce so important?

Northamptonshire has a population of around 733,000 people, and forecasts suggest local employment has the capacity to increase by about 3,600 jobs each year, or 25,200 jobs by 2020 – this means finding talent for your business could get even more difficult!

Many SME’s find a lack of time, and particularly costs of training courses can prevent them from offering their employees development opportunities. A report by the Federation of Small Businesses found that 43% of businesses listed the cost of training as a big challenge.

Training on offer though the SSW project has been specifically designed to bridge the gap in skills across the Northamptonshire region.

The benefits of upskilling your workforce

By encouraging employees to work towards these fully funded training courses and professional qualifications, your business can enjoy a range of benefits, including:

1. Increased confidence Taking formal qualifications and training courses can really help boost employee confidence and self-awareness. Your employees will work more efficiently, boosting the overall productivity of your business.

2. Get a greater competitive edge Offering training can help give SMEs the edge over their rivals, especially in highly competitive industries. This helps them to win new business, attract the best talent, and really stand out from the crowd.

3. Increased employee retention A more fulfilled, motivated and engaged workforce is a more loyal workforce, which means that your employees are less likely to look for work elsewhere.

4. Improved decision making When employees are trained in the latest techniques and approaches, they are able to make better decisions. Boosting employee confidence empowers them to be proactive and more productive, enabling improved decision making skills.

5. Growth The knock-on effect of all these benefits is greater potential for your business to grow, not to mention the personal growth and development of employees.

How are the courses fully funded?

The courses are co-financed by the European Union’s European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency. SSW funding is available to SMEs operating across all sectors in Northamptonshire, this includes high performance technologies, food and drink, logistics and industrial, professional services, tourism and hospitality to name a few!

Our friendly and approachable team are on-hand to discuss any requirements your may have. If you simply do not have the space to train your employees onsite, you can take advantage of our training facility based on Gold Street in the center of Northampton.

What courses can my employees take?

Here at The Square Metre we offer a range of qualifications.

We can even devise a programme to suit your business needs in areas such as Management, Team Leading, Customer Service, Business Administration, First Aid, Fire Safety, Conflict Management and Substance Misuse.

We work with some of the largest names in the UK to deliver bespoke training programmes, also supporting local individuals with their personal development, enabling them to gain qualifications and get back into work.
